Unit 8 · Acids & Bases
Lesson 73 of 91

8.2 pH & pOH of Strong Acids & Bases

01Full dissociation

Strong acids (HCl, HBr, HI, HNO₃, HClO₄, H₂SO₄) and strong bases (group 1 hydroxides, Ca/Sr/Ba(OH)₂) ionize completely.

So [H⁺] = acid concentration; watch for 2 OH⁻ in Ba(OH)₂.

02Notebook box

Memorize the 6 strong acids.

Worked example: 0.010 M Ba(OH)₂ → [OH⁻] = 0.020 M → pOH 1.70 → pH 12.30.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Strong = 100% ionized.
  • ✦Count OH⁻ per formula.
  • ✦Memorize the list.
Quick check

Did it stick?

1.pH of 0.001 M HNO₃?

2.pH of 0.01 M NaOH?

3.Which is a strong acid?
