6.3 Heat Transfer & Thermal Equilibrium

01Hot to cold

Heat flows from hotter to colder objects until temperatures are equal (thermal equilibrium). Energy lost by one = energy gained by the other.

At the particle level: faster particles collide with slower ones and transfer kinetic energy.

02Notebook box

q_lost = −q_gained.

Worked example: Hot metal in cool water: final T lies between, closer to the one with greater heat capacity (usually water).

Key takeaways
  • ✦Heat flows hot → cold.
  • ✦Energy is conserved.
  • ✦Collisions transfer KE.
