6.7 Bond Enthalpies

01Broken minus formed

Estimate ΔH from average bond energies: ΔH = Σ bonds broken − Σ bonds formed.

If the products have stronger bonds than the reactants, the reaction is exothermic.

02Notebook box

Broken (reactants) − formed (products). Not the reverse.

Worked example: H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl: (436 + 243) − 2(431) = −183 kJ.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Reactants broken, products formed.
  • ✦Stronger product bonds → exothermic.
  • ✦Average values = estimate.
Watch outBond energies are opposite in order from ΔHf: broken − formed.
Quick check

Did it stick?

1.ΔH = ?

2.Bonds broken 500, formed 700 kJ. ΔH?

3.Bond enthalpy calculations are approximate because…
