6.6 Introduction to Enthalpy of Reaction

01ΔH scales with the equation

ΔH°rxn is tied to the balanced equation as written. Double the equation → double ΔH. Reverse it → flip the sign.

Use ΔH as a conversion factor: kJ per mole of reaction.

02Notebook box

2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O, ΔH = −572 kJ → per mole H₂O = −286 kJ.

Worked example: Heat from 4 mol H₂ → 2 × (−572) = −1144 kJ.

Key takeaways
  • ✦ΔH is extensive.
  • ✦Reverse = flip sign.
  • ✦Use as a mole ratio.
Quick check

Did it stick?

1.A → B, ΔH = +50. B → A?

2.2A → 2B, ΔH = −80. A → B?

3.CH₄ combustion −890 kJ/mol. Heat from 0.5 mol?
