3.7 Solutions & Mixtures

01Concentration

A solution is a homogeneous mixture. Molarity M = mol solute / L solution.

Dilution keeps moles constant: M₁V₁ = M₂V₂.

02Notebook box

Make solutions with a volumetric flask; dilute by adding solvent to the line.

Worked example: 50.0 mL of 2.00 M diluted to 250 mL → 0.400 M.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Molarity = mol/L of solution.
  • ✦Moles conserved in dilution.
  • ✦Solutions are homogeneous.
