Unit 6 · Thermodynamics
Lesson 49 of 91

6.1 Endothermic & Exothermic Processes

01System vs. surroundings

Exothermic processes release heat to the surroundings (surroundings warm up; ΔH < 0). Endothermic processes absorb heat (surroundings cool; ΔH > 0).

Breaking bonds always absorbs energy; forming bonds always releases it.

02Notebook box

Thermometer in solution reads the surroundings. Rises → exothermic.

Worked example: Dissolving NH₄NO₃ makes a cold pack → endothermic.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Exo releases, endo absorbs.
  • ✦Breaking bonds costs energy.
  • ✦Measure surroundings.
Watch out'Breaking bonds releases energy' is always wrong.
