Unit 7 · Equilibrium
Lesson 70 of 91

7.13 pH & Solubility

01Basic anions dissolve in acid

If a salt's anion is a weak base (OH⁻, F⁻, CO₃²⁻), adding acid removes that anion and shifts dissolution right — more dissolves at low pH.

Salts with neutral anions (Cl⁻, NO₃⁻) aren't affected by pH.

02Notebook box

Mg(OH)₂ dissolves in acid; AgCl does not.

Worked example: Why does acid rain dissolve limestone (CaCO₃)? H⁺ consumes CO₃²⁻.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Basic anions → pH sensitive.
  • ✦Acid increases their solubility.
  • ✦Neutral anions → no effect.
