Unit 7 · Equilibrium
Lesson 66 of 91

7.9 Introduction to Le Châtelier's Principle

01Systems push back

If a stress disturbs equilibrium, the system shifts to relieve it. Add reactant → shift right. Remove product → shift right. Increase pressure (smaller volume) → shift toward fewer gas moles.

Temperature: treat heat as a reactant (endothermic) or product (exothermic). Only temperature changes K.

02Notebook box

Inert gas at constant volume → no shift. Catalyst → no shift.

Worked example: N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃ + heat. Cooling → shift right, K increases.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Shift to relieve stress.
  • ✦Volume ↓ → fewer gas moles.
  • ✦Only T changes K.
Watch outPressure changes and concentration changes shift position, not K.

Did it stick?

1.Adding N₂ to N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃ shifts…

2.Heating an exothermic equilibrium does what to K?

3.Halving volume for H₂ + I₂ ⇌ 2HI shifts…
