4.2 Net Ionic Equations

01Showing only what reacts

Split strong electrolytes (soluble ionic compounds, strong acids, strong bases) into ions. Cancel spectator ions that appear unchanged on both sides.

Keep solids, liquids, gases, and weak acids/bases as whole formulas.

02Notebook box

Always soluble: Na⁺, K⁺, NH₄⁺, NO₃⁻ salts.

Worked example: AgNO₃ + NaCl → Ag⁺(aq) + Cl⁻(aq) → AgCl(s). Na⁺, NO₃⁻ are spectators.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Split only strong electrolytes.
  • ✦Cancel spectators.
  • ✦Precipitates stay together.
Watch outNever split a weak acid like HF or CH₃COOH into ions.
