Unit 7 · Equilibrium
Lesson 63 of 91

7.6 Properties of the Equilibrium Constant

01Manipulating K

Reverse the reaction → K becomes 1/K. Multiply coefficients by n → Kn. Add reactions → multiply their K values.

Compare to Hess's law where ΔH values add.

02Notebook box

Reverse: 1/K · Multiply by n: Kn · Add: K₁ × K₂.

Worked example: A ⇌ B, K = 4. 2B ⇌ 2A → (1/4)² = 1/16.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Reverse = reciprocal.
  • ✦Scale = power.
  • ✦Add = multiply.
Quick check

Did it stick?

1.K = 100. Reverse reaction K?

2.Halve all coefficients, K = 25 → ?

3.Adding two reactions with K₁ and K₂ gives…
