Lesson 40 of 91

5.3 Concentration Changes Over Time

01Integrated rate laws

Plot data three ways. The straight line tells the order: [A] vs t → zero; ln[A] vs t → first; 1/[A] vs t → second.

First-order half-life is constant: t½ = 0.693/k. Radioactive decay is first order.

02Notebook box

First order: ln[A] = −kt + ln[A]₀; slope = −k.

Worked example: t½ = 5 min. After 20 min → 4 half-lives → 1/16 remains.

Key takeaways
  • ✦Linear plot reveals order.
  • ✦First-order t½ constant.
  • ✦Slope gives k.
Quick check

Did it stick?

1.ln[A] vs t is linear. Order?

2.Fraction left after 3 half-lives?

3.1/[A] vs t linear with slope 0.2. k?
